[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:50] Speaker B: Thank you for joining us. [00:01:44] Speaker A: Black Friday. [00:01:46] Speaker B: Wow. Fictional dialogue. [00:02:13] Speaker A: Okay. Bueno ele scenario. Me and Johnny are discussing our shopping habits during singles day. So I'm gonna start. Did you know Singles day has become such a big deal in China? It's even bigger than Black Friday now. [00:02:34] Speaker B: Yeah, I've heard that. It's crazy how much consumption goes on during that day. Everyone celebrating in their own way. [00:02:44] Speaker A: Totally. I was looking at some sales online and ended up buying a few things. It was too tempting. [00:02:53] Speaker B: Oh, same here. It's so hard not to buy things when they are discounted so much. It's funny because Black Friday used to be the main shopping day. [00:03:03] Speaker A: Well, now Singles day is still definitely making a big impact globally. And don't even make. Don't even get me started on how much they celebrate their consumerism. [00:03:16] Speaker B: It's really fascinating. The promotions are so clever that it makes you feel like you need to buy everything. [00:03:23] Speaker A: I know, right? It's a crazy sales frenzy. But it's fun to see how these holidays affect global of our consumption. [00:03:33] Speaker B: That's right. Okay. Hey, Vicky, are you the kind of person who gets into this shopping things and the singles day or Black Friday? [00:03:44] Speaker A: Not at all actually. So it's not for me. How about you? [00:03:50] Speaker B: Well, I don't know. Sometimes. Sometimes I do know if there is a good deal. Yeah, just sometimes I wait for Black Friday. Yeah. We moved on to the grammar explanation to our friends, right? [00:04:06] Speaker A: Sure. So let's break down how verbs becomes nouns in English. When we add certain suffixes, we can change the verb into nouns. So this process is called nominalization. [00:04:22] Speaker B: That's right. So. So we will focus on the most common ways to make nouns from verbs. And we will use real examples from today's dialogue. And we will help you also with this slides that we usually put on the screen. [00:04:35] Speaker A: Yes. So let's get started. Let's start with the shun and shun. So this. Let's see the word decide. We change to decision. My decision was to shop online during the sale. Now let's see another example. Celebrate with celebration. The celebration of singles day has become global. [00:05:06] Speaker B: Fantastic. That's right. So we move to another one. Okay. For example, finishing with mend. So we have develop. Develop. You change this to development. So you are just meant at the end of the noun development a sentence. As you see in the the development of online shopping platform has been huge. Another example is improve. That's maybe it's more known. No, improve. Improvement. So another sentence. The improvement in the deals this year is noticeable. [00:05:50] Speaker A: Yeah. Now let's look at hands and hands. Let's take a look to appear. We have appearance. So the appearance of new gadgets during single stays is always exciting. Then we have depend to dependence. The dependence on online shopping has grown with singles day. [00:06:15] Speaker B: Fantastic. Okay, so we got another one. For example, Al. And your. For example, we got approved as a noun. So approval. The approval of new products was fast during the event. And then you got also fail and failure. Like I think we got there. You. Yeah, and there was no failure in the logistics during the event. [00:06:46] Speaker A: Good. And finally we have er. Or. Or we have teach to teacher. The teachers of this year's GTECH sections were ex. Amazing. Then we have create. We turn to creator. The creators of the tech innovation were at the event. [00:07:13] Speaker B: Very good. So we have seen how these suffixes turn verbs into nouns, making our language more formal and efficient. [00:07:22] Speaker A: Yes. These nouns forms are widely used in business news and writing. So making our conversation clearer and more professional. [00:07:35] Speaker B: That's right. Excellent. Yeah. I think it's more or less logical. No, it's a little bit like in Spanish, I think. Nothing to do with Chinese. No, Vicky, but not at all. But Spanish and English more or less has that similar thing. You can make nouns out or make verbs out of nouns, just adding certain endings like the ones that we have learned. So we have a question as always for you. Okay, so let's dive into the most fascinating global shopping event. Singles day, celebrated on November 11, is known as the biggest online shopping event in the world. [00:09:37] Speaker A: Yes, it's huge. Originally, Singles Day was created in China in 1993 by Nanjing University students as a way to celebrate being single. They choose November 11th because the date 111111 resembles four ones representing singles. [00:09:59] Speaker B: All right, interesting. So at first it was just about celebrating being single, but over time it transformed into something much bigger. For example, in 2009, Alibaba, the E commerce giant, turned it into an annual shopping festival. And since then it has been growing exponentially. [00:10:20] Speaker A: Exactly. What started as a small celebration has now become the world's largest online shopping event. And in 2023, Alibaba made over 100140 billions in sales during this 34 hours event, surpassing Black Friday and Silver Monday combined. That's mind blowing. Right? [00:10:48] Speaker B: Right. That's true. Incredible. Definitely. The promotions and deals are incredible. You can find discounts so high, sometimes up to 90% off in various products from electronics to fashion. So the entire country goes into shopping mode. And it's not just in China anymore. It's a global phenomenon now. [00:11:10] Speaker A: It's like Black Friday, but bigger and more global. In fact, Singles Day has refined the way we think about sales events. Unlike Black Friday, which is mainly focused on physical stores, Singles Days has been fully embraced online. Making it more accessible to a global audience. [00:11:33] Speaker B: Exactly. It's incredible how, for example, Alibaba and other platforms use this technology to to create unique shopping experiences. They even host livestream sales events where influencers or celebrities showcase products and people come by directly through the phones. [00:11:52] Speaker A: And let's not forget the advertising strategies. Companies know that Singles Day isn't just about discounts. It's about creating a cultural moment, A time for people to splash and get great deals. It's become a celebration in itself. Just like Christmas shopping or Black Friday. [00:12:16] Speaker B: Yes. And let's talk about how brands and emotional marketing to attract buyers. Singles Day is all about making people feel like they they deserve something special for themselves, especially those who are single. So the marketing focuses on being inclusive and fun. It's about treating yourself. [00:12:35] Speaker A: That's so true. For example, companies use catchy slogans like treat yourself or celebrate being single. It's all about empowering consumers and making them feel like that is their day. [00:12:50] Speaker B: What's fascinating in that Singles Day doesn't just affect Chinese shoppers, it becomes global. People from all over the world are now participating in the sales. And many international brands also offer special deals to attract global consumers. In fact, international companies like Apple, Nike, Amazon and hmm. All join in offering exclusive discounts for the event. [00:13:17] Speaker A: Let's talk about the technology behind it. It's not just about online shopping. Alibaba has taken E commerce to the next level with its smart logistics system which ensures that orders are processed and delivered super fast. They've also patterned with logistic companies to handle the increased volume of orders. [00:13:43] Speaker B: Absolutely. And there's even more to it. There are entertainment events and gamification added to the experience. People can win prizes, get additional discounts by participating in online games or watching live streams. It's like a mix of shopping and entertainment, making the whole experience engaging and interactive. [00:14:06] Speaker A: Yeah, and it's not just about getting people to buy products. It's about creating a cultural event that everyone looks forward to. In China, Singles Day has even influenced the social behavior. People save up all year for events to buy things they want or need to. [00:14:30] Speaker B: What? Are you serious? They saved the whole year just for that? Okay, so let's compare Singles Day to Black Friday. In many countries, Black Friday was the main shopping day for years. But Singles Day has now surpassed it. Black Friday is usually about Bricks and mortar stores. While Singles day is entirely online, making it much more convenient for people to shop from anywhere. [00:14:57] Speaker A: Yes, Black Friday tend to have long lines and calls in physical stores, while single stays offer hassle free shopping. With faster deliveries and better tech integration, the global reach of single days has made it more accessible and that's why it's growing so fast. [00:15:20] Speaker B: So it's clear that Singles day is changing the shopping landscape. It's not just about buying stuff, it's about participating in an experience. People feel like they are part of something huge. And the global participation makes it even more exciting. [00:15:36] Speaker A: It's definitely a new era of consumerism. And while it's great to get discounts, we should also remember the impact it has on global shopping habits and how it's shaping the future of online retail. [00:15:55] Speaker B: Absolutely. So the future of shopping is online and singles day is leading the way. And let's not forget it. It's also a great day to pick up a special gift. Maybe for yourself, maybe for others. So yeah, if you like to do some shopping, Singles day might be your day. Or Black Friday coming soon. It's also another, another option. You know what, Vicky, I was thinking that I'm glad I'm doing this with you because I think that Aline would have get crazy just maybe stopping this, stopping just in the middle of this podcast and saying hey Johnny, I'm going just to buy everything in singles day. So yeah, I'm happy that you are here. [00:16:39] Speaker A: Thank you. Thank you. Well, we were talking about singles day also in our Chinese podcast. So that's why I'm here. [00:16:48] Speaker B: Like, you know, great, great. [00:16:51] Speaker A: We're talking about the same things. [00:16:55] Speaker B: So let us see the answer no to the question that we left before. [00:16:59] Speaker A: Yeah. So the answer is the celebration of singles Day generate a lot of online consumption. [00:17:10] Speaker B: That's right. So remember, celebration and consumption are both nouns formed from verbs. These transformations make our sentences clearer and more formal. So then now we have a question for you. So I don't know, just for example, can you make a sentence using today's words like celebration, decision or promotion. So can you just maybe create a couple of sentences or you can just leave it in your comments and we would love to hear about you. [00:17:45] Speaker A: Yes, just leave your answer in the comments below. I will check them. [00:17:52] Speaker B: Fantastic. So amazing, Vicky, we have covered making nouns from verbs, focusing on how we turn verbs into nouns using different suffixes. [00:18:04] Speaker A: Yes. And in the next episode we're gonna dive into writing reviews in English. Perfect for businesses app on product feedback. [00:18:16] Speaker B: Yeah. And remember you can practice everything you have learned [email protected]. so thanks for listening and we'll see you in the next episode. Oh, Bye. Bye.
